THE UPPER ROOM: THE PROMISED HOLY SPIRIT
The Power of His Promise
John 14:18-31

REVIEW

In the last message we looked at the Holy Spirit as our Paraclete – another Helper, Comforter, and Advocate of the same kind and quality as Jesus. He is active personally, He is always present, and He is our power for daily living. Someone once said, “The average Christian is bogged down somewhere between Calvary and Pentecost. Christians have been to Calvary for pardon, but have not been to Pentecost for power.”

I. WE WERE BORN AGAIN INTO A SUPERNATURAL RELATIONSHIP

In verses 21-24 Jesus uses the word “love” 7 times when speaking of our relationship to Him.

II. WE WERE BORN AGAIN INTO AN ETERNAL RELATIONSHIP

“We have almost forgotten that God is a person and, as such, can be cultivated as any person can. It is only after long and loving mental intercourse that the full possibilities of both can be explored.” – A. W. Tozer

The Gospel tells us what God has done for us in Christ. The Epistles teach us who we are in Christ.

“Love for Christ is not sentimentalism or a sickly pseudospiritual poignant attitude, and it does not result in mere lip service. Real love for Him is demonstrated by an active, eager, joyful, responsive obedience to His commandments. What you say about your love for Him is relatively unimportant – what counts is that you demonstrate your love for Him by how you live your life.” – John MacArthur
