FATHER'S DAY
MEN OF SHERWOOD, RISE UP!
Deuteronomy 6:1-9

I. TO RISE UP, WE MUST BE FAITHFUL

II. TO RISE UP, WE MUST BE AVAILABLE

“One of the things that surprised me when I first read the New Testament seriously was that it talked so much about a Dark Power in the universe - a mighty evil spirit who was held to be the power behind death, and disease, and sin....Enemy occupied territory - that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful King has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us all to take part in a great campaign of sabotage.” – C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries A.D., the Japanese warrior class (the Samurai) developed a strict but unwritten code of conduct called bushido, the Way of the Warrior. This moral code was handed down warrior to warrior, from master to pupil, generation to generation. It was not written in books but, as historian Inazo Nitobe noted, “on the fleshly tables of the heart.” There are seven bushido virtues that are revered by all true warriors:

1) Moral rectitude or righteousness

2) Courage

3) Benevolence, the desire to do good

4) Humble respect for others

5) Honesty

6) Honor

7) Loyalty and fidelity
