The Reality of Hell
Luke 16:19-31

OVERVIEW

We need a passion to see people who are far from God experience the new life He offers through Jesus Christ. Sherwood doesn’t exist to have programs; we exist to make disciples. And God’s plan for Sherwood to reach the world from Albany, Georgia, is YOU! Last week we looked at the difference one person can make in the life of another. Your witness matters, especially because hell is a reality for unbelievers. Though it’s not a popular topic of conversation, we need to know what the Bible says about heaven, hell, and eternity.

For further study, this series is available online at sherwoodbaptist.net/messages.

"But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." – Revelation 21:8

No one believes in hell anymore. You’ll never hear a preacher doing a funeral say, “Based on the life this man lived, he’s probably in hell today because he never gave his life to Jesus.”

“Hell disappeared. And no one noticed.” – Martin Marty

“Today, hell is theology’s H-word, a subject too trite for serious scholarship.” - Newsweek Magazine

“I don’t think there can be any future for heaven and hell.” – Gordon Kaufman, Harvard Divinity School

I. MANY SAY HELL IS NOT A LITERAL PLACE

A) Let's admit the problem

1) Some have a difficult time reconciling the __.

2) Buying into __ makes the doctrine of hell difficult to accept.

B) Let's look at the lies

1) __

2) __

When Scripture uses the word “eternal,” it uses it of both lost and saved.

“...he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name." – Revelation 14:10, 11

II. THE BIBLE PICTURES HELL AS LITERAL

A) The names of hell

1) __ (Revelation 20:14)

2) __ – Common word in the Old Testament where the unsaved go when they die. The KJV translates as “hell” 31 times and “pit” three times. The Hebrew word “Sheol” is translated into Greek as “Hades.”

3) __ – In Luke 16, the rich man went to Hades at death and was tormented in flames.

4) __ – This word is used 12 times in the New Testament, and Jesus used it 11 times.

5) __ (Revelation 20:14; 21:8)

6) Eternal __

B) The Circumstances in Hell

C) The Citizens of Hell

- Satan (Revelation 20:10)

- The Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:8)

- The False Prophet (Revelation 19:20)

- Demons (2 Peter 2:4)

- Judas (Acts 1:25)

- Unsaved sinners (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10; Revelation 21:8; 20:15)

It is a place...

1) Of __

“Those who love darkness rather than light shall have their doom accordingly.” – Matthew Henry

“After a million ages, God will not be any more inclined to release those in hell than He was at the very first moment.” – Jonathan Edwards

2) Of __

“If there be one thing in hell worse than another, it will be seeing the saints in heaven. Husband, there is your wife in heaven and you are among the damned. And do you see your father? Your child is before the throne, and you accursed of God and man are in hell.” – C. H. Spurgeon

3) Of __

4) That is __

If you want to know how long eternity is, get the image of a bird moving one grain of sand from the earth and flying with it to the moon. Then returning and taking another grain of sand. After all the sand had been removed, eternity wouldn’t even be started.

5) You get to by __.
