Clean Hands, Clean Heart
1 John 1:3-9

OVERVIEW

No letter in the New Testament demands a close examination of our hearts like 1 John. This beloved disciple of Jesus focuses on the essentials of the faith and how we can know that we have eternal life. All the evidences of salvation are present tense. This is not about a “hope so” salvation or a decision you made in the past that you can't recall – this is a look in the mirror to check your heart. The Word of God runs a probe into every corner of our spiritual heart to show us where sin or self is cutting off the flow of the life of Christ through us. John clearly contrasts what the life of the believer should look like versus the imitations of the world or the facade of religion and church membership. By the time we are through with this series, you should know without a doubt if you are a Christ follower.

If a relationship is important, we maintain it – we call, text, send a message on social media, write a letter, email. But how are we at checking in with our heavenly Father and checking our hearts?

I. CHECK YOUR HEART ON THE SERIOUSNESS OF SIN

What impact does sin have on our lives?

The first ten verses of 1 John 1 lead us to examine our hearts:

- vv. 1-4 – If someone says they are a Christian, find out what they believe about Jesus.

- vv. 5-10 – We should check our hearts on our attitudes about sin.

What are the characteristics of light?

PRAYER: “Lord, make me sensitive to anything that intrudes, influences, or impacts my life in a way not pleasing to You. Show me anything contrary to Your will.”

II. CHECK YOUR HEART REGARDING CONFESSION

Verse 9 is one of the most well-known and least applied verses in all the Bible. John is writing to saved people, and there is a conditional clause.

There are two ways you can misuse this verse:

1) ___

2) Become convinced you’ve sinned so much that you’ve __.

-It is to be __.

-It is to be __.

-It is a __.

III. DO YOU WANT YOUR HEART CLEANSED?
