Check Your Heart - Love God, Love Others
1 John 14:14-21

OVERVIEW

No letter in the New Testament demands a close examination of our hearts like 1 John. This beloved disciple of Jesus focuses on the essentials of the faith and how we can know that we have eternal life. All the evidences of salvation are present tense. This is not about a “hope so” salvation or a decision you made in the past that you can't recall – this is a look in the mirror to check your heart. In the last message, we discussed our new position in Christ as children of God. Understanding who we are and Whose we are should result in pure character, pure purpose, and pure motives. We are a new creation in Christ with a new spirit and new power, and we should examine ourselves to see that we are walking in a manner worthy of Christ before a watching world.

Steps to living out of the love of God:

1) Treat people the way __.

2) Act in loving ways __

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket – safe, dark, motionless, airless – it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.” – C. S. Lewis

3) Refuse to __

4) Depend on the Holy Spirit to __
