Check Your Heart - Living by Faith
1 John 5

OVERVIEW

No letter in the New Testament demands a close examination of our hearts like 1 John. This beloved disciple of Jesus focuses on the essentials of the faith and how we can know that we have eternal life. All the evidences of salvation are present tense. This is not about a “hope so” salvation or a decision you made in the past that you can't recall – this is a look in the mirror to check your heart. In the last message, we looked at the love of God and how it affects us and the way we love those around us. As we seek to live out the love of God, we must treat people the way God treats us, act in loving ways regardless of how we feel, refuse to keep score, and trust the Holy Spirit to change our hearts and make us more like Christ.

I. THE NATURE OF FAITH

John waits until the end of his letter to bring up the concept of faith. He talks about the nature of biblical faith in verses 1-5 (”Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God...”, v. 1). He then moves quickly to defining what faith looks like.

II. THE EVIDENCE OF FAITH

The root problem for the defeated Christian is a failure in the realm of faith. We’ve failed to believe or to obey, or both. By faith I am to daily connect myself to God's overcoming power through the Holy Spirit based on the authority of His Word.

III. THE POWER OF FAITH (vv. 18-21)
