Faith Under Fire
STANDING ON THE PROMISES
1 Peter 1:22-2:3

OVERVIEW
In light of the growing opposition to people of faith, and to Christianity in particular, how are we to live? For the first time in American history, Christianity is being rejected. The culture, the arts, politics, and education are increasingly resistant to believers having a verbal and vital faith. Should we just close our mouths and hope that Jesus will return soon? If we are called to be salt and light, how does that work in a secular society? Even in tough times, there are principles for living and growing in your faith. In the last message, we looked at holiness as the work of God and the will of God in the life of believers. Jesus redeemed us through His death and when we understand the seriousness of the cross, we’ll have no problem with the call to holiness.

“The Peter of the Four Gospels felt the tug of holiness, as he saw it in Jesus, but lacked the power to rise to it. The Peter of the Acts, on the other hand, was always linked to the resurrection of Jesus with the victorious adequacy which had now become the possession of the Spirit-filled Church.” – Paul Ree

I. THE POWER TO PREVAIL

How should I respond?

1) Our response toward God should be to be __. (1:16)

2) Our response to others is we should __. (1:22-25)

3) Our response to ourselves is __.

“Most of the great religions of the world begin with the externals. . . . The starting point is usually with diet, dress...the hope being in keeping the externals. . . . That is exactly contrary to the Scriptures.” – A. W. Tozer

II. THE POWER OF PERMANENCE

The Bible Is Unlike Any Other Book:

1) It is the __ Word of God. (1 Peter 1:10,11, 23, 25; 2 Timothy 3:16)

“We believe in verbal plenary inspiration. Verbal means 'word-for-word’ – not that God just gave the thoughts, He gave the words as well. You can't have thoughts without words, and you can't have mathematics without numbers. If you change the numbers, you change the math. If you change the words, you change the thought.” – Adrian Rogers

2) It is the __ Word of God. (1 Peter 1:11)

3) It is the __ Word of God. (1 Peter 1:23 – “it abides forever”)

4) It is the __ Word of God. (1 Peter 1:23 – “the Word”)

5) It is the __ Word of God. (1 Peter 1:23)

III. THE POWER OF DESIRE
