SERVANT KING: Defining Discipleship
Mark 8:27-38

“Woe to the person who smoothly, flirtatiously, commandingly, convincingly preaches some soft, sweet something which is supposed to be Christianity.” – Soren Kierkegaard

Jesus makes two clear proclamations:

1) The proclamation concerning His death

2) The proclamation concerning the cost of discipleship


“The concept of a suffering Messiah was foreign to Jewish theology. The Old Testament foretold a sufferer and a Sovereign, but the Jews did not combine the two in one person. They looked for the glorious throne but not for a shameful cross. Hence Jesus began to teach the truth as to His Person and mission in precise yet plain language.” – What the Bible Teaches

When Jesus began to reveal His suffering and coming death, it was in stark contrast to the predominant view of Messiah among the Jews. They believed the Messiah would come to take His throne and overthrow His enemies. He would rid the land of oppression and enemies. Jesus knew there were two distinct comings: 1) to die for our sins, 2) the later coming to rule and reign.


“It is my pride that makes me independent of God. It’s appealing to me to feel that I am the master of my fate, that I run my own life, call my own shots, go it alone. . . . But, that feeling is my basic dishonesty. . . . I’m dependent on God for my very next breath. Living independent of God is self-delusion. . . . My pride is the idolatrous worship of self. “We see a profound change in the message now being delivered by Jesus. Formerly, He had drawn vast numbers of listeners and had promised rest to the weary. Now, doubtless, His message would decrease the size of the congregations, for instead of offering rest to the weary, He was beginning to demand more resolution from His listeners. Earlier, the people had been obsessed with what they might lose if they did not attend the services; now they were forced to consider what they might lose if they came. Jesus was now offering hardship instead of ease; problems instead of peace; and in some senses, hurt instead of healing. If we might borrow a modern definition; He was about to institute measures which would separate men from boys, women from girls, mature people from the irresponsible, true seekers from spongers! As Gideon of old, He was thinning out His army; He desired only the dependable to walk in His footsteps; He was choosing between persevering saints and persistent humbugs. The icy winds blowing from Calvary's cross were already beginning to chill the enthusiasm of the superficial followers who loved to share His loaves and fishes!” – Ivor Powell, Mark's Superb Gospel
