SERVANT KING: The Cursing of the Fig Tree
Mark 11:12-14, 20, 21

“In the East, the fig tree produces two definite crops of figs per season. Winter figs in May and June, summer figs in August and September. Sometimes the crops overlap. It is possible to pick figs nine or ten months of the year. This was during Passover (April) and the tree should have borne early, ripe figs.” – Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia

I. THE MIRACLE EXPLAINED

This moment is on the heels of the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. That day was a fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9, confirmation that Jesus was the one true Messiah.

II. THE HYPOCRISY UNCOVERED
A)
B)
“The Scribes and Pharisees would no longer put up with anything Jesus did or said from that moment on. This sealed His death, but it also sealed their destiny.” – Ray Steadman
C)

Israel was a barren fig tree, and the leaves only covered its nakedness. The magnificence of the temple.

“Fruitlessness now when the Messiah has come means fruitlessness forever. It is not the time of the temple’s consummation but its consumption.”
