The Character of Christ

Sermon Notes

THE CHARACTER OF CHRIST

Who is Jesus? How did He lead? What qualities did He value? Our biblical understanding of these questions changes everything. In one of his letters, Paul urged Timothy to remember Jesus Christ and reminded him of Jesus’ character: “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). Jesus’ character is steadfast, and He cannot go against who He is. His character is our standard. If we are going to know Jesus intimately and follow Him wholeheartedly, then we must know His character. Join us for this Sunday night series as we look at various attributes of our Savior.

The Character of Christ: The All-Satisfying Bread

John 6:25-27, 35

Jesus didn’t come to give bread, but to __ bread.

You need Jesus in the __ a lot more than you need the storm to __.

The people saw Jesus as __ and not __.

We were meant to see the signs and desire more of __, not more things for __.

Work for the food that endures to eternal life:

1) I am this __ that leads to eternal life.

2) There is no amount of __ you can do that will make you willing to __.

“If you aim at heaven you’ll get __ thrown in, but if you aim at __ you’ll get neither.” – C. S. Lewis

The difference between will-power and joy-power:

Will-Power: using your __ to elevate or suppress a desire

Joy-Power: a greater joy __ yourself that helps you prioritize your desires

The Character of Christ: Gentle and Lowly in Heart

Matthew 11:28-30

Who is God and what is He like?

  • Incommunicable Traits: traits that are true __ of God (omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, self-existent, self-sufficient, eternal, sovereign)
  • Communicable Traits: traits that are true of God but that can also become __ (loving, good, merciful, kind, holy, faithful, just, gracious, wise, longsuffering, righteous, truthful, jealous for His glory)

We know the heart of Jesus and who He is because…

1) He __ us who He is. (“for I am gentle and lowly in heart…”)

“In the one place in the Bible where the Son of God pulls back the veil and lets us peer way down into the core of who He is, we are not told that He is ‘austere and demanding in heart.’ We are not told that He is ‘exalted and dignified in heart.’ We are not even told that He is ‘joyful and generous in heart.’ Letting Jesus set the terms, his surprising claim is that He is ‘gentle and lowly in heart.’”
– Dane Ortlund, Gentle and Lowly

Jesus is more ready to __ you than you are to __ to Him.

2) He __ us who He is through His __.

  • He was __. (Matthew 9:20-22)
  • He touched what was __. (Matthew 9:18-19, 25)
  • He moved __ sinners. (Matthew 9:27)

3) He reveals to us who He is through __.

  • At His feet is the place of __ in our learning.
  • At His feet is the place of __ in our sorrow.
  • At His feet is the place of __ in our service.

The Character of Christ: Jesus, the Satisfier of the Soul

Colossians 2:9-10

1) Without Jesus Christ, the soul longs for __.

Never underestimate the __ of the soul.

2) Without Jesus Christ, the soul leans on empty __.

A soul without Christ is very __.

Sin is deeper than simply __.

Sin is a moral failure, and it leads to spiritual __.

“The almost impossibly hard thing is to hand over your whole self to Christ. But it is far easier than what we are all trying to do instead. For what we are trying to do is remain what we call ‘ourselves’—our personal happiness centered on money or pleasure or ambition—and hoping, despite this, to behave honestly and chastely and humbly. And that is exactly what Christ warned us you cannot do. If I am a grass field, all the cutting will keep the grass less but won’t produce wheat. If I want wheat…I must be plowed up and re-sown.”
– C. S. Lewis

3) With Jesus Christ, the soul __ satisfaction.
